Location:

Akrotiri (the “Cape”) is the common name for the peninsula that lies to the north east of the city of Chania only ten to twenty minutes by car from Chania and ten minutes from the international airport.

Akrotiri has approximately 10.000 inhabitants. Some of them live in the charming and traditional villages; others live in attractive small new suburbs of Profitis Ilias, Kounoupidiana, Korakies, Kalathas, Agios Ounoufrios, etc.

Kounoupidiana serves as the “centre” of Akrotiri and offers a good selection of shops, restaurants and other services, and is in addition home to The Polytechnic University of Crete. The road network is good and with frequent bus service to Chania.

The villages of Akrotiri are: Sternes, Horafakia, Mouzouras, Argoylides, Aroni, Agios Onoufrios, Pazinos, Anemomyloi, Marathi, Kathiana, Kampani, Stavros, Kalorouma, Hordaki, Rizosklopo and Agia Zoni.

With picturesque sandy beaches, all awarded with the Blue Flag, century-old monasteries and churches, impressive caves with rich litho logical and archaeological interest, historical monuments, Akrotiri attracts many visitors every year, who enjoy Cretan hospitality and nature at their best.

Stavros has a dreamy sandy cove and is an excellent spot for relaxing holidays. The circular coast is pleasantly catered with umbrellas and sun beds. It is a popular summer destination among the locals. There are a couple of taverns and bars for a snack. The bare hump on one side of the bay has its name in Hollywood, as the slope was the location for the academy award nominated movie Zorba the Greek starring Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates. A small fishing jetty is harbored near the hill, from where fresh fish is supplied to the local taverns. The beach is 15 km from Chania.
