Kokkino Chorio (or "Red Village") is a small village situated in Apokoronas in Chania regional unit of Crete, Greece.
It sits on the Drapano Cape overlooking the magnificent Souda Bay. If you leave the village square and proceed to the highest points above the village you will come – eventually – to the church of St. George / Agios Giorgos.
The coast line around Kokkino Chorio is also a great place to visit. There are caves in a number of places and what I believe is officially known as ¡Koutalas cove¢ is a great place to visit. Go down the hill from the village and head towards the sea.
Close by there is also the astounding Koutalas cove, a great place to swim and snorkel.
Koutalas beach or Koutalis is located in Kokkino Chorio of the municipality of Apokoronas, about 27km east of the city of Chania and 11km away from Vamos.
Koutalas beach is a relatively quiet and rocky beach usually visited by families from the nearby villages and few well-informed vacationers. Because of the particular area, in which are some magnificent caves like the Cave of the Elephants or the Petsis Cave, many lovers of exploration are visiting the beach.
The beach is narrow and the waters enclosed by the rocky region result in a small fjord. It is generally secluded beach with few visitors, has calm blue-green waters that create dreamy scenery especially when the sea is calm!
On the beach you will often come across with a group of divers exploring the underwater world or having their first diving lessons! There is also a shelter that offers the only shade on the beach to protect you from the sun and some rocky points offered for sunbathing, fishing and many dives!
To get here you have to take direction north to Kokkino Chorio and proceed to the lighthouse at the tip of the cape. Nowadays there are signs that will lead you to the beach.
A swim in the beautiful waters of Koutalas worth combined with a walk to the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula, which was built in 1864.
At Kokkino chorio you can also find traditional taverns with delicious snacks in order to satisfy your appetite after a long swimming and a cafe for breakfast or afternoon coffee!
A traditional glass factory with handmade artwork also located in the village worth a visit to admire and buy beautiful creations.
Nearby there are many other beautiful and most organized beaches such Kalives, Almyrida and Georgioupolis and traditional villages for exploring and wandering at the local rhythms!
