Location:

Akrotiri area

Akrotiri is a round shaped peninsula at the east of Chania. It is an area with long and rich history, lots of monuments and natural beauty. You will find there many beautiful beaches, most of them well protected and not affected by the “meltemia” (northern summer winds); the majority of them are quite close to Chania (10-15km far from the city). At the centre of the peninsula, on a broad plateau, it is situated the airport of Chania.

It is worth visiting the area; you will find scenic and traditional villages, as Stavros, where it has been filmed the famous “Zorba, the Greek”, the cute village of Sternes, the villages of Kounoupidiana, Korakies, Pithari, Aroni and Marathi, which served as the port of the ancient town Aptera.

It is also worth seeing some old and historic monasteries as the Monastery of Aghia Triada ton Tsagarolon (Holy Trinity) built in the 17 th century, some 20km far from Chania at the North; the Monastery of Kyria ton Angelon tou Gouvernetou, of the 16th century, some 25km far from Chania at the north and 4,5km at the north of the Monastery of Aghia Triada; the Monastery of Aghios Ioannis Erimitis or Xenos (St. John), more at the north, dating back to the 6th or 7th century, is found within a steep ravine where one may arrive by stepping down 385 steps. The Catholicon of the Monastery has been dug in the rock and it is considered that it is the first monastery built on the island.

At the same area, between the two monasteries it is found the cave of Arkoudiotissa or Arkouda; a stalagmite evoking a bear (“arkouda” in Greek) gave the name to this impressive cave, where there have been found traces of worship of Artemis and today there is a small church in honor of Virgin Mary.

One of the worth visiting places are the tombs of the Venizelos family, where has been buried the important Greek politician and prime minister of the early 20th century, Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936).

Three local feasts (“panighyri”) take place in the village on the 29th of August in honour of St. John (Monastery of St John), on the 8th of September in honour of Panaghia (Kounoupidiana and Sternes) and Aghia Triada.

Numerous hotels, rooms to let and studios are offered for accommodation. Plenty of taverns, restaurants and cafes are available for delicious food and drink. Also in some of the beaches sea sport facilities are available; windsurfing is the best choice at the area, thanks to the meltemia.

Kalathas, on the peninsula of Akrotiri, is a small natural bay on the edge of a ravine, 14km northeast from Chania and 10Km from the international airport of Chania. It is an ideal place if you want to do unwind and relaxing holidays.

Kalathas is not really a village but a fairly new, quiet settlement, mainly for people who wanted to move out of Chania. It has seen a lot of building activity in recent years as more and more Cretans are moving out of town.

Here there is a famous, quiet, sandy beach lined by pine trees and a lovely islet in front. There is plenty of activities the visitor can engage while at the beach of Kalathas. Water sports include windsurfing, waterskiing, canoes or scuba diving and one can also enjoy beach volley on the volleyball field made on the beach for this purpose. There are plenty of restaurants near the beach where one can enjoy fresh fish and local specialties.

The area is a quiet residential area with some hotels, studios and apartments a few restaurants by the beach and a few small supermarkets and no nightclubs and bars which makes this the perfect setting for quiet family vacation near the beach.

The small town of Kalathas has about 5.500 inhabitants and is located in Kalathas Bay, east of Chania. The town has a port which is the second biggest of Crete and one of the biggest ports of Greece. Daily and regular ferry services are connecting Kalathas to the harbour of Piraeus. Because of the strategic position of the port, a naval station of NATO has been implanted in Kalathas Bay. In the middle of the bay is a small islet of the same name with a beautiful Venetian castle standing in its centre.

Kalathas provides all kind of accommodations and entertainment and it is linked regularly by bus to Chania. From Kalathas one can visit the interesting surrounding region as well as Aptera which used to be a powerful city of Greece and where Roman and Byzantine remains and a Turkish fort can still be seen.
