At the east side of Souda is the ancient city of Aptera, an important Minoan settlement near which stands the Venetian Fortress (Koules). In the settlement Kalami is an imposing fortress named Itzedin, which over the time converted to a prison and a place of executing political prisoners. Today is a memory space and it is hosting major cultural events.
