At a distance of approx. 68km from Hania, in the Municipality of Inahorion and at the slopes of mount Koutroulis, we come across a beautiful and verdant village with a strange name. Amygdalokefali, perched on a hill at 460m above sea level, is a small community of not more than 170 inhabitants, boasting a dramatic view. Together with its neighbouring villages of Livadia and Keramoti, they form a harmonious traditional blend and a puzzle of unique natural beauty. Among the areaĒs attractions and within a short distance from Amygdalokefali, you will reach the traditional village of Aghios Myronas and the cave of Aghios Mamas.
Livadia village is located in the middle of the E4 European Walking Path (running from Spain, across many countries to Crete, for around 320km) and its part from Kambos to Elafonissi, via Chrysoskalitissa Monasteri. ItĒs is a hard trek up in the mountains, one of the most spectacular natural trails, passing through a multitude of landscapes, olive groves and locust trees and impressive black and red volcanic rocky formations. Livadia have a small shore, with any tourist facilities (such as umbrellas or sun beds), remaining plain and pristine.
Pass the port and you will reach the last large sculptured rock, characterized a “monument of nature”. Behind it you will discover a cluster of small, sandy and pebbly bays with emerald waters. They are an ideal location for a refreshing dive, for fishing, snorkelling and tranquil swimming, far from the bustling crowds.
The area of Inahorion is of the most beautiful in western Crete, extremely interesting, as approximately 2/3 of it has been inducted into the environmental protection program of the European Union, Natura 2000 Life. In this still unexplored part of the island, naturalists can enjoy the wild beauty through a variety of alternative tours, such as trekking, hiking and agrotourism. There are interesting walking paths, most notably the Amygdalokefali- Kefali path (4km in length), the Amygdaloti-Keramoti-Kambos trail (6km long) and the trail from Amygdalokefali to the beach, where there is fishing shelter.
Elafonissi is undoubtedly one of the most popular Cretan destinations and a definite stop at this southwestern part of the island. The beach, which “looks out” over the Libyan sea, is easily accessible from Hania, in around 1,5 hour and a distance of not more than 75km.
Its name means “The Deer Island”, however you will see no deer running around. Nonetheless, the area is of unique natural beauty and has been inducted into the environmental protection program of the European Union, Natura 2000 Life.
The first impression is utterly idyllic. An emerald lagoon with shallow, turquoise crystal waters glowing in the sun surrounded by pure white sandbars which take a pinkish tint from the corals that it contains. The beach is organized, with canteens, umbrellas and sun beds, while a few cedar trees offer protection from the hot sun, to travellers who manage to come early and find them free.
The distance to the nearby inlet is not more than 200m and very easy, since the island is separated from the shore by a shallow – not deeper than 1m - sandbar. Take a walk around the island and you will discover several tracks, coves and solitary beaches in its southern part.
The peaceful beach is bustling with travellers during the summer months, especially in July and August. Ideally, you should be here around four in the afternoon, when day-trippers start leaving and the place becomes quiet again.
Apart from its unique nature, Elafonisi has an equally interesting historic past, as here were located the ancient Mousagores Islands, with temples dedicated to Apollo – the leader of the Muses - and Ino – the Goddess of the waves – and ancient rituals were performed to calm the sea gods. In modern times, Elafonissi has been the place of great sacrifice during the Turkish occupation, on 24th April 1824, when the Turkish troops lead by Ibrahim killed 40 armed Cretans and some 600 women and children who had seeked shelter in the rocks. Their blood dyed the ground… hence, the pink colour of the sand… Today, there is a memorial plaque on the island, commemorating the event.
At 5km from Elafonissi the Monastery of Chrisoskalitissa is a must. It stands impressively on a solid rock. Pay your respects and try to find the “golden step”… It is said to be visible only to the true believers.
