Vamos is located away from the hustle of the towns and tourists. It is an unspoilt Cretan village with view of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains), and has maintained its traditional architectural style. One will find some interesting churches, clearly showing the traditional architecture of the buildings in the area. The hospitality and the way of life the Cretan people used to lead before the burst of tourism is captured in these villages as a present way of life. In a quiet position in the popular Village of Vamos and within easy walking distance of all the facilities including restaurant, taverns, bars, kafenia, shops, post office, bank, pharmacy and close to the Health Centre. The area is very scenic, having maintained its traditional character, mainly due to the attentive restoration of old buildings. In 1995 a group of villagers started a project to preserve the traditional way of life of Vamos. With funds from the European Union, they started a project to showcase the crafts and products of the region and restored old stone buildings using traditional materials and crafts and turned them into guest houses.

Gavalochori is a village situated in the Apokoronas area and not far from the sea side resort of Almirida. It can be reached on the Almirida - Gavalochori - Vamos route. The village is of historical importance. It is named after the Byzantine family of Gavalodon. In the village there are remains from the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish periods, and artefacts found in Gavalochori proof that the village was inhabited in earlier times (Minoan, Neolithic and Roman times). On the village square of Gavalochori there is a World War II memorial. In Gavolochori you can visit the Historical and Folklore museum, which is housed in a building from Venetian and Turkish origin and has original stone arches. Here you can learn a bit about the history and the culture of the village. There are items of pottery, coins, costumes and weapons on display. Chania - Apokoronas - VAMOS
Chania - Apokoronas - VAMOS
The municipality of Vamos, the capital town of which bears the same name (communities of Vamos and Douliana), consists of the former districts of Gavalohori (Gavalohori, Agios Pavlos, Koprana, Agios Vasilios), Plaka (Plaka, Almirida, Kabia), Kokino Horio, Kaina, Kefala (Kefalas, Paleloni, Drapanos), Xerosternio (Xerosterni, Litsarda), Selia (Selia, Souri, Likotinara), Kalamitsi Alexandrou. It is a semi-mountainous area with interesting natural surroundings, dominated by local woody (oak, holm-oak, cypress, wild almond, carob, laurel and pear trees) or bushy (hairy thorny brooms, cretan sage, herbs etc.) flora and architectural heritage. Small villages, most of which are old, are spread throughout the area, which is characterised by a lack of water and limited agricultural productivity. While this lack of resources resulted in a severe reduction of the population it did not have any effect on the architectural character or the natural surroundings of the region until recently. This is the main reason why a lot of foreigners buy old houses or land and settle here. The biggest part of the steep, rocky coastline has preserved its natural wild beauty and is proposed to become a protected area under the Natura 2000 Environmental Management Program.
