Location

Akrotiri is a round shaped peninsula at the east of Chania. This area has a long history with lots of monuments, natural beauty and beautiful sandy beaches.

The area consists of many scenic villages that worth visiting. One of them is the famous Stavros, where the famous movie “Zorba, the Greek” was filmed. The region hosts many old and historic monasteries as the Monastery of “Agia Triada ton Tsagarolon” (Holy Trinity) built in the 17th century, the Monastery of “Agios Ioannis Erimitis or Xenos” (Saint John Hermite) since 7th century. A cave attracts the interest in the area, where a stalagmite evokes a bear and the cave is named “Arkoudiotissa” or “Arkouda” (Bear in Greek). A small church in honour of Virgin Mary can be found in this cave.

The famous tombs of the Venizelos family are worth visiting, where the important Greek politician of the early 20th century, Eleftherios Venizelos was buried.
