Location

The village in Ierapetra is featured mostly by a mountainous landscape. The picturesque alleys, the sculptured rock formations and the olive groves interact greatly with the unconstricted, sea views. The old paths are still preserved and used to the daily access of the villagers. The near villages are worth of visiting and ideal for small excursions. Small local shops and taverns liven the calmness of the area.

Plenty of churches with Byzantine rhythm and temples wait to be explored in the area. The old church of Parish, All Saints, lays in the middle of the village demolished but preserving a fine collection of Byzantine icons in the interior, and two Venetian wall reliefs on the exterior of the chapel. The Church of Kato Panagia (Low neighborhood Virgin Mary), a tiny Byzantine-Venetian,  double domed, church with Venetian and  Byzantine temples, out of marble and woodwork respectively,  with the gravestone of a Venetian lord on the floor. The Church of St. George, a small Byzantine church in the surroundings set in a very beautiful natural environment. An ideal country walk experience via a pathway starting from the last wooden bench you meet outside the village on the direction of Kalamafka.

The Donkey walks and promenades are famous in this place due to a British couple that have permanently settled in and created an animal farm, organizing donkey excursions and adopting the village lifestyle. The plateau of Stavros (Plateau of Cross) is accessed by car or donkey, offering unique views to all over eastern Crete, including the Golf of Mirabello and Libyan Sea..

The Sarakina's Gorge enriches the beauty of the whole region and the set of activities, although it is partly accessible.  A very attracting gorge beginning from the neighbor village Mythoi and ending in Myrtos, that can be followed by car from the road. The Gorge  indicates the outstanding natural beauty, combining the calm Cretan landscape with rocks and sparkling views to the sea

The sandy beaches that extend either to the northeast (the gulf of Mirabello), or to the southeast (Libyan Sea) offer a calm, Cretan landscape with abosulte beauty and clear waters for swimming and relaxing. Beaches with azure waters, such as “Voulisma” and “Agios Panteleymon” (Saint Panteleymon), small sea gulfs or isolated beaches can be discovered in the whole area. One of the best beaches is Agia Galini and others extened to the region are Agia Fotia, Ferma, Koutsounari. On the other side of Ierapetra, the village of Myrtos offers also a unique, sandy beach. Beyond Myrtos lays alone far away from villages or city centres and  worth visiting and swimming site, Keratokampos. However, nobody should miss a day trip to “Chrissi Sand Island” (the Golden Sand Island) with the sparkling sea, azure waters and the golden beach. The natural, exceptional beauty of the island is protected so no building activities are allowed.
