Location
The village Rodopou used to have approximately 1000 inhabitants. Today the inhabitants are about 500. It has beautiful Community Shop in the basement of which houses the Cultural Center of Rodopou. It has a lovely Primary School that used to operate since the Turkish occupation. The school is housed in a building which was built in 1925. Stone building, with simple lines, without any particular decoration but impressive.
In the center of the village are two beautiful Byzantine churches of Saint George and Saint Anthony. The second church was built based on the plans of renowned architect John Syrichas and the guidance of Architecture Professor Anastasios Orlandos .
What amazes the visitor at Rodopou is the great central square, which has been formed with the study of the famous architect Emilia Kladou - Bletsa.
The village has 4 traditional cafes, bakeries, a small grocery store from which you can obtain the necessary food. Rodopou also produces original honey, oil, fine wine and raki.
The nearest beach is 3 km in Ravdoucha. The nearest town, at 5 km, is the seaside Kolimbari with the famous monastery of Gonia, where you can find bank, super market and several restaurants with fresh fish. Also, the beach of Afraton, also at 5 km, is famous for its crystal clear waters.
If you prefer mountain the paths you can take are also many and interesting. At a distance of 3 km for the small villages and White Water Astratigos with old houses and churches. Many prefer to walk in the mountains of the Cape or get to the old monastery of Giona. Also, at the cape one can find and collect famous Cretan herbs like malotira, thyme, sage, pennyroyal, marjoram and oregano.
