Nio Chorio is one of the larger villages of Apokoronas with a permanent population of about 650 people. It is situated on the side of a hill overlooking the olives and orange trees in the lush valley below. There are also views of the White Mountains and Souda Bay from some of the village houses.
You reach the village by driving from Kalyves (5 minutes drive), via Armeni (2 minutes away) until you reach Nio Chorio.
The village is located in the middle of Apokoronas Province resting comfortably against the side of a hill. Its name means 'New village', and that because it was built in the ruins of a village destroyed by invaders of Crete.
The village square is dominated by the huge Plane tree which provides lush shade in the summer. If you continue driving, then in another couple of minutes you'll see Macheri village.
Nio Chorio is a working Cretan agricultural village with a pharmacy, tavernas, bakery and mini market selling local fruit and vegetables.
A history lover will be attracted to the fort of Koules, on the top of the hill where the village is found. The fort is not well preserved, with only a few walls standing and commemorating its glorious past. The building we see today was built by the Turks at the site of a preexisting Venetian tower to control the area of Kalives, the villages at the slopes of Lefka Ori and the passage from Apokoronas to Keramia. Koules was composed of a central, rectangular building with two semicircular artillery towers on the east and the west side.Another smaller fort was built just on the opposite peak. Water was supplied to both towers by a nearby tank, which still survives.
It¢s a peaceful place to live and is convenient for the coast and the highway whilst experiencing life in a real Greek Village.
