Objective : Greece as a twelve - month tourist destination

The Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mrs Angela Gerekou participated yesterday in the work of the 5th Forum Exceltur on Tourism held in Madrid.
The Forum was jointly organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Exceltur with the theme of “Prospects and Challenges for Tourism Recovery in 2010-2011” and involving Tourism ministers from around the world.

The issue was the quality of the tourism product and the importance of tourism education in higher yield and adaptation of industry executives in the new market data and the support of the tourism product from the banks and financial services.

About Greek tourism policy, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mrs Angela Gerekos said:

"Our goal is to make Greece a twelve month tourist destination, breaking the phenomenon of seasonality of Greek tourism and investing in new transport policies and in particular air. In this context, we have already established a working group with the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Networks for the topic.
Greece will invest in her comparative advantages, the numerous options we can offer to the world traveller, a diverse and unique tourism product: 6,000 islands, 15,000 kilometres of coastline, a Mediterranean climate, local products, a unique geo-strategic location and a great cultural delivery. We will continue to support mature, traditional tourist destinations such as Corfu, Rhodes, Halkidiki, Crete and Mykonos with innovative new proposals, boosting their tourism identity. At the same time, strengthen and our smaller islands and the larger mainland.
And at this point I want to stress this: we want our friends and partners understand that our tourist product is not limited to sun-sea model .
Indeed, the Greek mainland, with the beautiful mountains, has a unique advantage for the development of specific forms of tourism, the expansion of the tourist season and developing forms of winter tourism."
