“Telegraph” invites everyone to Spinalonga island
“Telegraph” praises Spinalonga island and invites everyone to visis “The Island of Tears”.

In its online version, “Telegraph” places Spinalonga on 1st place of recommended “spooky” places to visit on a cruise.

Island of Tears (Spinalonga) – Brought to life by VIctoria HislopĒs novel The Island, the Spinalonga story is a haunting one. Known locally as Kalydon the island is located in the Gulf of Elounda in north-eastern Crete.

Originally, Kalydon was part of the island of Crete but during Venetian occupation this piece of land was carved out of the coast for defence purposes and a military fort – still standing but crumbling – was built there.

Now uninhabited it was used as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. You can visit it on a cruise and walk down its eerily empty streets, still lined with boarded up shops and stalls.

There is also an abandoned graveyard and hospital. The last person to depart the island was a priest, in 1962.
