Travelling by Air

Daily flights operate between Crete and most major European destinations, either directly or via the new Athens International Airport, which is a 50-minute flight away. During the winter months, when direct charter flights do not operate services, Crete is connected to Athens with very frequent services. There are several daily flights to and from Athens airport to the International Airport of Heraklion, the International Airport of Chania and the Public Airport of Sitia. Furthermore a new airport is in planning in the area of Kastelli / Heraklion to replace in a few years the current International Airport in Heraklion. The state-of-the-art Athens International Airport opened in 2001 and is Europe's newest southern gateway to the world.
